The underlying psychology is to take oneself seriously, to regard one's past choices and the current situation as significant. So once external stimuli are presented, these stimuli need to prove that one is important enough to warrant breaking the existing order. The portrayal of those in power in films and dramas also captures this point: first moving the eyes, then slowly turning the head, with the expression remaining largely unchanged. Conversely, reaction speed is a sign of submission—subordinates need to respond quickly to demonstrate attention and obedience. The modern society's admiration for "agility," "responsiveness," and "adaptability" is a form of slave morality. "Knowing when not to change," like "there's toilet paper in every public restroom" (a quote from Lee Kuan Yew), seems simple, but it is a very large, very deep, and very important topic.
