Unpopular opinion: Quantum is a threat or blessing in cryptography (to create new systems) but IMO AI has higher chances for an earlier impact. There’s some good probability that: - AI could discover new hard problems (basis for cryptosystems), e.g., some structured optimization problem with provable hardness OR attacks, especially on implementations, but also in cryptanalysis. - AI could assist in constructing protocols (like zero-knowledge proofs, MPC optimizations) by exploring the enormous design space. - Hybrid AI + theorem provers might even help in automated proof generation for crypto protocols (we’re starting to see this in formal methods). - There will be noise and false positives, but I have high aspirations AI will eventually help cryptographers more than any other science, even math themselves in various cases in the next few years. Don’t be surprised if a new ideas combining AI + advanced cryptography will start showing up.
