We’ve long believed that the killer app for crypto would eventually be, well, money: storing and transferring value.
Crypto has served the former quite well, at least for patient, long-term holders of the preeminent L1s. But for transfer of value — that is payments — we’re just off the blocks (er on the blocks?).
Stablecoins show a lot of promise for payments, and via @Stablecoin and Stripe we’re seeing a lot of early adoption (e.g.,
But it’s not well-recognized that blockchain infrastructure isn’t up to the task of meaningfully evolving or supplementing global payments infrastructure. TPS are too low by orders of magnitude, gas fees are too high (and denominated in chain specific tokens with volatile prices), and payments transactions are crowded out by massive trading volumes.
That’s why we’ve been working with Paradigm to build @tempo, an L1 purpose-built for payments use cases. It’s now live in private testnet.
Stripe is generally committed to cultivating an open ecosystem for financial services, and this is especially true when it comes to crypto. Tempo is an independent company. We have a long list of design partners. We’ll launch with a diverse set of validators. And perhaps most importantly, Tempo is stablecoin neutral: any stablecoin can be used for payments and gas.
We’re extremely optimistic that crypto rails and stablecoins will improve global payments experiences, and we believe Tempo will play a key role. If you’re interested in building with our small team, see our open roles:
